Yesterday I learned something from my Facebook feed that blew my mind, and honestly, restored my faith in humanity a bit.
There is a really bad-ass chick by the name of Moira Johnston who tends to wander around New York City (frequently appearing in Union Square, I hear) completely topless. I don't know if you know this, but it is legal in the city of New York, and plenty of other places, I have learned. The law states that women are permitted to bare the same body areas that men have been showing off in public for so very long, which of course makes perfect sense. That's the way it should be, and I'm glad Moira is spreading the word, because I would have gone on completely oblivious otherwise.
Of course, when I found this story, there were plenty of comments insinuating that Moira should still cover up because her breasts aren't perky enough to flaunt. If you thought that...fuck you. People like you are the reason the vast majority of the world struggles with their body image to begin with. There is no reason to encourage other people's insecurities just because you have issues with your own. Shut up.
I can understand why Moira is a rare commodity, despite the law. Even though we all fed from them as infants, the world still doesn't know how to deal with breasts, which is sad, to say the least. This woman is incredibly brave, and I think everyone could benefit from showing a little more skin every now and then.
