Show Me How You Boylesque!

Stolen from the Facebook page of Rique Shaw
Well folks... I did it. It was a long journey, and there were times when I wasn't sure I would make it, but my efforts were fruitful (heehee). Yesterday afternoon, I brought my sparkling brand new alter ego Lucky Charming to life at the Bowery Poetry Club and turned out a highly successful burlesque number. What's more? My entire class brought the motherfucking house down with their individual numbers as well as our fantastic group finale. I have spent the last seven weeks with some amazing guys and I am so proud to have worked with all of them. A huge THANK YOU to my classmates Matt Knife, Teddy Turnaround, Rique Shaw, Dick Velour, and of course our beloved guide Go-Go Harder for this astounding experience.

When I first started off on my boylesque, I thought I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. I assumed it would be much like the drag world, but with more nudity and (generally) more talent. But I could not have been more wrong and I could not be more glad of it.

The difference between the two genres is the same as the difference between cats and dogs, in terms of both the audience and the performers. The drag queens are obviously the cats, instinctually hating you until you can prove yourself useful, and the audiences are similar in that they are hard to please unless you have a crown on your head. The burlesque crowd? Completely opposite. Everyone that I've met (and I met quite a few yesterday) has been unbelievably supportive of the new guys, and really restored my faith in performers. When Tigger!, the first ever Mr. Exotic World, came backstage before the show and told us to "Fuck 'em in the hearts, bitches!" my mind was blown. Clearly this is where the love is, and this is where I need to be. And besides, any environment where someone can introduce herself to me as Iris Ex Plosion with a straight face is totally my scene (shout-out to our lovely stage kitten!) And the audience? Wow. I don't think I've ever scene such a great crowd. Before yesterday, I could not have imagined an entire room full of people hooting and hollering as I took my clothes off, but it totally happened, and it felt amazing. HUGE thanks to everyone who cheered me on!

This was without a doubt the most fun performance I've had in years. I'm exhausted beyond description, but the adrenaline high still lingers a little bit. The huge downside to a great performance, of course, is that it's over, which tends to leave one feeling quite depressed.

But that won't last long. Our little collective of delectable dudes will be reprising our group number this friday at the first ever New York Boylesque Festival! I'm so excited to have another chance to perform with these guys, and I can only hope there will be more to follow.
